Jebel Ali Storage vs Demurrage vs Detention Explained

Last reviewed: 5 October 2026 Scope: Jebel Ali Port (DP World UAE) & Global Ocean Carriers

One of the most frequent and expensive sources of unexpected logistics overhead for UAE importers and freight forwarders is confusing terminal port storage fees with carrier demurrage and container detention charges. While all three penalize excessive dwell time, they are levied by different entities, for different reasons, and under distinct contractual rules. This page is about Jebel Ali. Khor Fakkan yard charges are on the Khor Fakkan storage page.

Core Differences Comparison Matrix

Term Meaning Where It Applies Billed By Typical Trigger
Storage Container remains at terminal yard beyond port free days. Terminal (T1–T4) DP World UAE Region Port free time exceeded following vessel discharge.
Demurrage Carrier equipment retained inside terminal beyond contractual free time. Inside Terminal / Port Perimeter Ocean Shipping Line Carrier free time exceeded before haulier gate-out.
Detention Carrier container retained outside port beyond allowed turnaround. Outside Terminal (Warehouse / In Town) Ocean Shipping Line Delay in returning empty container to port depot.

âš ī¸ Rate Variability Notice

Do not treat tariff figures or free days as universal. Storage and demurrage rates vary significantly across:

  • Ocean Carrier: Lines such as MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, and COSCO each maintain proprietary demurrage and detention tariffs.
  • Terminal & Port Facility: Specific yard concessions or CFS storage rules may apply at Terminal 1 versus Terminal 2, 3, or 4.
  • Cargo Classification: In the DP World tariff, reefers get the same port free storage as dry boxes but also pay a daily monitoring charge, and some dangerous goods classes (IMDG class 5 and 8) get little or no free time. Carriers set their own reefer and DG demurrage terms.
  • Commercial Contract: High-volume shippers and freight forwarders may have negotiated contractual extended free time (e.g., 14 or 21 days demurrage) stated on the Bill of Lading.
  • Effective Date: DP World and the carriers update their tariffs from time to time. Check current terms with your carrier and with DP World ↗.

3. Container Detention

Billed by Ocean Carrier

How to Avoid Storage, Demurrage and Detention: 6-Step Checklist

All three clocks can run at the same time, and each delay adds cost per container per day. These steps are what forwarders and clearing agents use in practice:

1. Prepare customs before the vessel arrives

Lodge the import declaration with Dubai Customs ↗ as soon as the carrier's manifest allows, so duty and inspection decisions don't use up free days.

2. Get the delivery order early

Settle freight and local charges with the shipping line so the electronic DO is ready on Dubai Trade. Without a DO you can't get a gate appointment.

3. Know both free-time allowances

Note the port's free storage (see storage charges) and your carrier's demurrage and detention free days from the bill of lading or contract. The earlier of the two is your real deadline.

4. Track the whole consignment and save it as a watchlist

Paste the container list into the tracking workspace and save it as a watchlist. When you re-run it, containers whose status or terminal changed since the last check are highlighted, and the storage filter shows boxes whose free time is expiring or has expired.

5. Book collection as soon as the container lands

When the status changes to LANDED FROM VESSEL, book the e-token for the right terminal. If the vessel hasn't arrived yet, an arrival alert emails you when it lands.

6. Return the empty quickly and keep the EIR

Return the destuffed container within the carrier's detention free time. Keep the gate-in Equipment Interchange Receipt as proof if a detention invoice is disputed. The tracker shows the MT FROM TOWN date once the port records the return.
